The 300 Series of stainless steel provides excellent corrosion resistance because they contain nickel and chromium. Also, these stainless steels are formable and weldable.
Grade 304
304 stainless steel is generally the most common grade of stainless steel. High amounts of nickel and chromium make it corrosion resistance. Some applications include fasteners, appliances, piping and applications that would corrode regular carbon steel. It is also used for applications that require formability.
Grade 316
316 stainless steel has high amounts of nickel and chromium, with carbon, manganese and silicon. A difference between 304 and 316 is 316 contains 2 to 3 molybdenum by weight. This gives it increased corrosion resistance.
Some applications include marine applications, medical equipment, refinery equipment and chemical applications. Used for applications with high corrosive elements, under water and requiring strength and hardness.
