Case Against Section 232

A court case, by the American Institute for International Steel (AIIS), could be headed to the Supreme Court. In the case, AIIS accused President Donald Trump’s Section 232 of being un-Constitutional.

On March 25, The US Court of International Trade (CIT) ruled against AIIS.

In response to their defeat, AIIS chairman John Foster wrote,  “We strongly believe that in the end this matter will be settled by the Supreme Court.”

Section 232 initially led US steel prices to level not seen for nearly a decade.

HRC Prices Are Stable

Hot-rolled coil prices are remaining stable. Lead times vary between 3 to 5 weeks. AMM recently reported a West Coast distributor as stating, “Things are going to be flat.”

A decline in steel imports have helped prices remain high. But ultimately the strength of the US economy will determine prices.

On positive news, after a weak February jobs report and fears of recession, March posted a stronger than expected jobs report.

Although 2019 is not predicted to grow at rates seen in 2018, it is still expected to see solid growth.
