Steel, Security And USMCA

On Nov. 30th, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement was signed by all three countries.

Experts have said the agreement represents a better deal for the United States, compared to NAFTA. In fact, President Trump has said that “the money we save” from the new agreement can help pay for a more secure border.

Since Dec. 22nd, the U.S. government has been under a partial government shutdown (the longest in US history). The Democrat controlled House of Representatives won’t approve President Trump’s $5.7 billion funding request to secure the border.

Steel And National Security

In his recent address to the nation, President Trump offered the Democratic leadership a deal on border security. He is asking for funding to build 230 miles of  “see-through steel barrier” on the U.S.-Mexico border.

“These are steel barriers in high priority locations,” the President said. “This is not a 2,000-mile concrete structure from sea to sea. These are steel barriers in high priority locations,” he added.

In addition, President Trump said he wants to build “trust and goodwill necessary to begin real immigration reform.”

Let’s hope the political stalemate and partisan gridlock can be stopped. To be sure, the right border security reform will be good for both national security and the economy.
