The US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) was signed on Friday, November 30. Some groups are critical of the agreement and some groups are supportive.
The question is will the US House of Representatives send the signed agreement forward to the US Senate. Trump has recently said he will not reinstate NAFTA if USMCA is not ratified.
The American Iron and Steel Institute backs the agreement. In addition, the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) also supports the signing of USMCA.
In contrast, the UAW does not believe USMCA protects American workers sufficiently. But is this an honest viewpoint or is it simply an anti-Trump position.
Certainly, GM’s recent labor cuts shows the importance of protecting American industry and jobs from unfair trade and labor practices.
Section 232 Tariffs Remain
Section 232 tariffs remain on Canada and Mexico imports. The tariff on steel is 25%.
US steelmakers have said they would like the tariffs replaced by another trade control to limit imports.
Consequently, country specific quotas can help protect our domestic steel industry.
